About

About Lynn Clausen

BA, PGCE, MA (Dist), MA Creative Writing
Former English Language & Literature Examiner | Head of Drama and English teacher
CLASP Fellows Program, Institute for Writing & Thinking, Bard College (2021–2023)

I am an educator, writer and freelance instructor specialising in English, critical thinking and academic writing, with a complementary background in drama and performance-based communication.  My current professional focus is shared between preparing students for GCSE English Language and Literature examinations and teaching at undergraduate level within liberal arts First-Year Seminar and Composition contexts, where I support learners in developing analytical reading practices, structured argumentation, confident discussion and thoughtful written expression.

In 2023 I completed the two-year CLASP Fellowship with the Institute for Writing & Thinking at Bard College — an intensive professional development programme centred on writing-to-learn pedagogies and metacognitive approaches to education. The Writing & Thinking framework continues to shape my practice, encouraging curiosity, independence and purposeful academic inquiry through structured yet creative writing methods.

My earlier professional background includes examining for English Language and Literature qualifications, departmental leadership in Drama, and postgraduate study in Creative Writing. These experiences continue to inform both the analytical and expressive dimensions of my teaching, linking language, performance and written communication in meaningful and practical ways.

Alongside examination and higher-education instruction, I work internationally with younger learners in online environments, teaching creative writing, philosophy and critical-thinking skills while building strong foundations in reading, communication and written expression.

With over three decades of experience in education, mentoring and curriculum design — complemented by pastoral support and counselling-informed practice — I am committed to fostering inclusive and intellectually engaging learning environments where learners feel both challenged and supported. My pedagogical approach draws upon Writing & Thinking, Habits of Mind, dialogic learning and performance-informed strategies that encourage clarity, confidence and reflective practice.

Beyond formal teaching, I contribute to local community initiatives through voluntary adult creative-writing workshops and collaborative cultural projects, including the organisation of a biennial community theatre production. These projects allow me to remain connected to creative practice and community literacy while complementing my academic work.

Projects & Collaborations

Raven Drama

Raven Drama classes ran up until Autumn 2025 at a range of venues across LD3.  Raven Drama classes provided confidence-building communication work, English tuition and LAMDA examination preparation. Informed by my experience as a former LAMDA examiner, I remain open to undertaking similar provision on a project or short-term basis.

Projects & Collaborations

Raven Drama

I provide bespoke online tuition and mentoring for learners in both school and home-education settings, as well as for adult learners. Areas of study include English Language, English Literature and communication/performance-informed skills, from KS2 through to A and UG Level. Support may also include study skills, examination technique, academic writing and public speaking, alongside preparation for 11+ and 13+ entry examinations where required.

I work with learners across a wide range of ages and confidence levels. Drawing on over 30 years of experience in education, including departmental leadership, I place strong emphasis on cultivating calm, enquiring and self-assured approaches to study. Sessions are delivered online in focused yet supportive environments designed to encourage independent thought, clarity of expression and intellectual confidence.

Creative writing remains a central strand of my practice. I offer individual mentoring and small workshop-style sessions that explore craft, voice and structured approaches to developing original work.

Projects & Collaborations

I offer short-term workshops and project-based programmes, delivered primarily online, either as single sessions or over a series of weeks. These may focus on academic writing, critical thinking, creative writing, communication skills or performance-informed oracy, and can be designed for individuals, small groups or institutional cohorts.

All sessions are structured to provide a calm, focused and supportive learning environment, encouraging independent thought, confident expression and purposeful engagement without unnecessary pressure. Workshop formats are adaptable to a range of educational and professional contexts, including schools, colleges, community organisations and adult-learning settings.

Alongside my current online and academic work, I have previously led creative and cross-disciplinary projects across mid and south Wales through the Arts Council of Wales Lead Creative Schools initiative, collaborating with educators and creative practitioners on literacy-focused and environment-based projects. These experiences continue to inform my approach to workshop design, particularly where reflective writing, communication and collaborative enquiry are central aims.

I remain open to short in-person residencies, visiting-tutor blocks or intensive project placements where a focused period of on-site delivery would be beneficial.

Fees

Fees vary depending on age / level of tuition.  I tutor for young learners, as well as those preparing for A levels and the fees reflect this.

I can offer one-to-one tuition as well as tuition for small groups. Again, fees vary according to this.

Sessions can start at half an hour (ideal for younger learners, especially online) and incrementally increase up to two hours, depending on student requirements.

I try to be as flexible as possible and understand life can happen unexpectedly – my T&Cs try to reflect the need for some flexibility, for both parties.
